随着长城保护工作的深入开展和大量保护工程的实施，因长城遗产类别认识混乱而引起的保护原则和设计定位不准确等问题逐渐凸显。 通过对近10年长城保护维修工程中工程定位不准确等问题的分析，以长城遗产定位问题为切入点，提出了古建筑、古遗址的遗产类别特征，并比较了二者在保护维修原则上的差异。 在此基础上，对长城的遗产类别进行了阐释，并提出了基于长城遗产类别认识的保护维修建议。
